Water treatment is the process of removing impurities and pollutants from water in order to make it safe for use and consumption, or to be drained back into the environment. There are several different methods of water treatment, and many are dealt with at the municipal level so you don’t even realize they’ve been done. However, the fact is that the water that fills your drinking glass and the water that fills your toilet come from the same source.
For example, any water that leaves your home through your drains or toilets is treated and reused. Water that’s used for drinking is purified with filtering and chemicals such as chlorine. Purification removes any kind of fungus or natural substances such as algae, as well as getting rid of manmade contaminants such as chemicals or metals.
You can also use your own personal water treatment systems to further care for the water you use at home. There are two common home water treatment systems: softeners and filters.
Water softeners add salt to the water to reduce the calcium and magnesium found in hard water. Hard water can be difficult to use because it leaves stains and causes build up around taps and drains. It’s also not healthy for any pet fish, or your hair and makes it difficult to clean laundry. Municipalities will usually treat water for hardness, but well water and areas with exceptionally hard water will require additional treatment.
Water filters are used primarily for drinking water. There are a number of different types of commercial water filters available and they’re designed to further filter already treated water. They may also remove some of the chemicals that are left behind by the treatment process. You can have a filter installed directly into your tap so that water treatment is immediate. You can also use a fridge filter or a simple jug filter. You have to monitor your filter, though, because if you leave it too long and allow it to get dirty or clogged you could actually be putting contaminants into your water rather than removing them. Filtering as a water treatment is a good alternative to buying bottled water, which can be expensive.
